8A - Solving the Problem

  • The problem I have selected is the lack in development of United States soccer players due to the current college and major league draft system.
  • This problem stems from the fact that other countries' players are playing in the major leagues much earlier than Americans are. This causes them to develop their skills at a more accelerated rate.
  • My proposed solution is that we take away NCAA Soccer and take away the MLS Draft. Most college soccer players played for their local academy teams, which are youth academies of MLS teams. They should just be able to continue their development with those teams and if they are good enough at a younger age they should have the ability to sign and play professional earlier. I understand this would take education away from those stars that can play at an early age, but that is the trade-off. Most players around the world become professional at 17 anyway. If you have not made it by then you probably never will and should apply to college. I have no doubt that this would lead to better development of our domestic players and can make this nation one of the better soccer nations around the world due to the resources we have.

  1. Hi Arman
I had to get my brother (the ex-soccer player) to explain both systems that you mentioned. He seems to think that another issue with American soccer is that its too heavily driven by money. Meaning that a lot of the poorer but better players don’t really get the opportunity to go to college or go professional because they can’t afford it. I think their needs to be a way for less fortunate soccer players to be able to train. With my brother’s club soccer team, he had a lot of good players that were on some form of scholarship or would do work to pay for their club fees. I think that was beneficial to both the kids and their teams.

  2. Hello,
I think that your solution is very good, however I think that you can leave the NCCA there so that kids that cant make the academy can try and prove that they can play. The NCAA could work like a division two team so that they can get a chance to show their skill and try to make the professional team. Taylor also has a good point in that it cant be as expensive as it is currently as that prevent everybody from playing it. All in all your plan is excellent and could work.

  3. Hey, I like the idea as it would push younger people to be professionals early. You mentioned the age and it reminded me of France's team where they had such young professionals. The body wears out faster the older someone is so the peak time is when they are young. However, I do think that the NCAA can be tweaked to stay. If people can't go professional than they should have another avenue to get there. Some people do improve with time and need the age to get better. We need a larger pool of players and having the NCAA with your solution would give a larger pool of talent.

  4. Hey,
I do like your idea on how to solve the issue of having such a long wait for our younger aspiring soccer players. You say that you want to get rid of MLS and NCAA. I think you may be able to get away with just getting rid off just one of them then signing them off to the pros from there. Just because I still dont think that getting right out of high school to go to the pro scene is very smart.
